Eggs on a Plate
Dali became interested in Freud in college. Freud liked to reduce all human motivation to sex, and Dali used a lot of sexual themes in his paintings. If I remember correctly, the two eggs on the plate represent him and his brother, who died shortly after he was born. Salvador was named after his dead brother, and his parents constantly reminded him of it throughout his life. The egg hanging from the string represents a womb and the string represents an umbilical cord. The carrot, unsurprisingly, is symbolic of a penis.
Basically, this is a family portrait with the two Salvadors on a plate, his mom as the hanging egg, and his dad as the carrot.
There’s also a man and a young boy standing in the window to the left, which represent him and his father.
